The Liberty Nickel was minted in the United States from 1883 through 1913. Also known as the V Nickel, it replaced the Shield Nickel which was the first U.S. 5 cent coin. It was a wildly popular coin, in part, due to its use within coin operated machines of the times. The Liberty V Nickel was later replaced by the Buffalo Nickel in 1913.
