In 1997 the recently liberated State of Eritrea issued its own first currency series. The crisp, uncirculated Eritrean 1 Nakfa banknotes were from that series. The front shows the tri-face image common on Eritrea notes and represents the diverse nationalities of the small African country. Also shown are Eritrean Liberation Front soldiers, erecting the national flag. The reverse shows a makeshift countryside school scene. Interesting side note: The banknote resembles U.S. currency...perhaps because it was designed by Clarence Holbert of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Price: $4.95 |
